The big ones are the "creative input" behind it. You know, doing something with nearly nothing. 300 was very, very well done. I agree, it is not the most historically accurate movie, but it does not really matter if the skies were really dirty and if the swords were really shaped that way? The helmets were spartan even for Spartans, and the naval commander wasn't even mentioned.
Big deal. I am one for accuracy, and the message was accurate. It was 110% right. Three-hundred Spartans stood to their death for freedom.
This is f#@king rocking.
That is why I joined the Navy instead of going to go draw comic books or get back into college after a semester off. I joined to go kill people who are threatening your freedom.
"Sparta will burn! Her men will die at arms, and her women and children will be slaves or worse!" said Leonidas when the Ephors told him he could not have what he needed to defend Sparta, to stop the enemy before they even got to Sparta.
That is the same thing we are doing today. We have to fight them there, or they will come here and make life so, so much worse.
Here we are 2500 years later, and we're fighting the same people. Persians (yes, the Persian Islamo fasists are behind the current struggle) trying to take over the world.
"Here on this rugged piece of land called Platea, Xerxes's forces face obliteration!" Helios said.
It's the same thing, it's just that the rugged piece of land is Iraq. All the "Iraqi insurgents" are dead. Now, it's Persians and Syrains flooding in through the borders. If Iraq goes free, then it's the biggest threat the fasists have faced. It will spread. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the new Xerxes. He thinks he's a god-king.
He thinks his chance to conqure the Persian lands back under his control and force the worst parts of the faith back upon the world. He's right. If we don't secure Iraq, then things will be so very much worse.
Sparta was the only city-state to stand against the army of Xerxes. Their politicians held King Leonidas back, but he did what he could. Once other nations of Greece heard Sparta was on the warpath, others followed, but not many. Athens was burned to the ground. Athens submitted, and they were enslaved. They turned their weapons over to Xerxe's army. Not Sparta. Sparta knew what was at stake. Sparta knew Xerxe's army had to be stopped before they could take anything else, and they united all of Greece.
Twenty-five hundred years later, the United States of America is the only nation to rise against the armies of fasism. Once America did, others followed, but not many. Spain was bombed. Spain submitted. France was burned. France submitted, and they are being slowly enslaved. They will turn over their weapons to the fasists. Not the United States. The United States knows what's at stake.
Like Sparta then, politicians are holding the United States back from stopping the facists, the world conquerers, the remanents of the Nazi regime (follow the Ba'ath party's history and Iran). The armies of Xerxes are back, and they are the biggest threat the free world has seen.
For Freedom.
For Justice
For Liberty
To the death.
300 struck a cord with me, because it's what we're up to now, today, in our modern war. The Spartans gave everything for freedom.
They knew freedom is not free; it is earned with blood and steel.
The only way we can lose is if our own politicians keep us from winning. The Spartans triumphed over such challenges. I can only hope we can, too.
